After the construction of the Three Georges Project, the channel will be scoured by clear water over a long distance for a long term, and it may cause negative affect and creat a host of new problems to the stability of waterway regulation structures. In this paper, experiments were conducted to study the mechanisms of the failsure of the waterway regulation structures, and also, comparative experiments were performed to study the differences of hydrodynamic characteristics between sediment laden flow and clear water flow. Furthermore, adaptability of the waterway regulation structures to clear water scour in Middle Yangtze river was analyzed, and new types of spur dikes were proposed to adapt to the new water and sediment conditions. The main conclusions of this studies are as follows: (1) The results of the study on the hydrodynamic characteristics of spur dikes show that, the mechanism of local scour which may cause the failure of the structures indirectly involves three interactive elements in the vicinity of a spur dike, high concentration of velocities, down-flows and vortices, and periodic velocity fluctuations induced by shedding vortex making stones move more easily in the vicinity of spur dikes.
